The squash seeds are the third generation from mother seeds found about six years ago at an archaeological dig on a Menominee reservation near Green Bay, Wis. "They found a clay ball, (used) for storing seed. It was carbon-dated to 850 years ago," Menzel said.

In the ball were squash seeds that eventually were given to Winona LaDuke, a longtime advocate for native food sovereignty. She called the squash Gete-okosomin, an Anishinaabe word that roughly translates to "really cool old squash."
